I had a third kind experience some 32 years ago when I first saw the Osmonds in concert but from a distant point of view. Last Saturday, I was standing at inches from him. It is so much more fun to get close, I decided to kick off that chair and hit for the edge of the stage ! When I was 14 years old, at my first Osmonds gig, I regretted I could not have done so. This time, I was going to get as close as I could. No more feeling sorry !
My husband, two sons and I are well seated though, 16th row, right at a corner in the center but the boys will remain seated while I go up to the front. As soon as the roaring bass sound is pulsating and the digitalized countdown is starting on a giant screen, my excitement is slowly rising. And then in no time, it's "Will it go round in circles". I'm so close, I can't believe it !
After the short break, I get back to the front but I am not so close now as many women have flocked to the front as well. I couldn't be happier though, I am only a few meters away and there is no tall woment around. It's my lucky night ! Now he's bursting into his oldies. He's spicing up the old stuff with new orchestrations, punchy tones and a lot of humor. He's making a laugh out "Puppy Love", performing among others, an exasperating country version and a deep voice Barry White-like sexy version. I like it when Donny is showing self-derision.
We all know Donny has grown up but I am not sure about some fans who have kept that pubescent image of the man... Somebody is throwing a small pink pig plush on the stage. I thought : how puerile ! Picking up the plush, Donny is making a joke out of it : "Ooooooh it's aliiiiiiive !" Then he throws the object over his shoulder. I think the drummer was hit... Just kidding.
I guess that Donny was at his best in the heavy songs. I simply adored his "Hold her tight" version and it was odd to see him slip on that guitar but man, can he play !
Although the concert lasted for about 2 hours, it all seemed so short and I think I am not the only one with this insatiable feeling. But we all know that he's coming back with the entire family in the UK next May, as he told it again on the Brighton stage. The last piece of his show will be that necessary "Crazy Horses" in which he injected sheer energy and power. High-pitched neighs, smoke, running horses on the giant screens, all is there to make it perfect. Wearing a red jacket, Donny is running all around the stage, like a wild horse, sometimes hidden by a thick puff of smoke. Phew ! What a blast !
This is "D" MomentAt last ! I have been waiting for this for over thirty years...
This awesome performance at the Brighton Centre was also a wonderful means to meet all those French fans I have been talking with on the Web for years now. Most of us met right in front of the Brighton Centre VIP entrance where a flock of loyal fans were already waiting to welcome the artist. After a two hours (or so) wait, some members of the Brighton Centre staff are installing guardrails along what was to be Donny's short route and a big black bus with an Austrian registration plate is parked just in front of the VIP entrance, blocking any way out or in. A few minutes later (or was it half an hour,... I can't remember : time evaporated), another black bus similar to the one parked in front of us, is coming in. My husband shouts out : "He is in !" Everybody's sticking to his/her place and some try to steal others' places. My eldest son, 13 is next to me, he will try to get an autograph on his "Life is just what you make it" book I took with me. After a while, Tina Salmon, Donny's right-hand comes to the fan and announces : "He's asleep." It does not take long before the man gets out of the bus to greet his fans with a big smile and an angel face.
He's kissing people on his way but mostlly signing autographs. I won't get mine. A rude and nasty woman is pushing my son away from me and he will tell me later that she even hit him. Shame on this obnoxious person ! I do not call this a Donny fan attitude. This is coward, execrable, scurvy... Next time, I'll take a whip and have my son wear a leather nail necklace. We are too nice, I won't be anymore now !
His passage has lasted about 23 seconds or less but I had the time to take a few pictures and I am glad I did. Tina Salmon is still out, talking with people. I can't help but intercept her before she goes in the Centre. I have no idea of what I will tell her but I need to talk to her. "Please, will you tell Donny that there is a bunch of French fans here. I am myself Belgian. Will you please tell him that we love him very much and that we haven't forgotten him (I should have added : although the music industry on the European continent has)." She smiled at me and assured me : "I will." I have no idea whether she told him or not but I had to do this. It made me feel good.
Here at last !
July 24 No but... seriously! As stated in teen magazines in the 70's...
Come oooooooon !
